Virtual Teaching Internship

Every Saturday,  from October 10th to November 28th, 2020

This Fall, Outreach360 is offering a unique remote teaching internship. For two hours each Saturday for eight weeks, you will provide our students with the valuable opportunity of speaking with native and like-native English speakers through guided small group conversations. In addition to invaluable teaching experience, you will also enhance your teaching knowledge through a professional teacher training curriculum created for independent study. You will be expected to work on this during an additional hour each week of your internship, on your own schedule.

For two hours every Saturday, you will be leading small-group conversations in English for the benefit of Outreach360 students in the Dominican Republic and Nicaragua. With all the training and resources you need to be successful, you will be empowering our students to grow in their spoken English skills by giving them the opportunity to put what they learn in the classroom into practice. The topics each week will vary depending on the English level of the students you are paired with.

Interns on a Health & Science track can choose to focus their weekly conversations on topics relating to Health & Science. By sharing your passion, you will be sparking a curiosity for the natural sciences in our students while also teaching them specific vocabulary words. Make sure you check the box identifying you as a Health & Science Intern on the registration form!

For an additional hour during the week, you will be expected to plan for your upcoming Saturday conversations while also expanding your teaching skills through a self-selected online teacher training. You will have access to dozens of professional education modules, which you will then be able to personalize for your weekly independent study. They include:

  • How to Make a Virtual Classroom

  • Making Online Classes More Active and Interactive

  • Tips for Engaging Students in Online English Language Learning

  • Formative Assessment for the Student-Centered Classroom

  • Teaching Lower Levels

  • Teaching Science & Math to English Language Learners

  • Teaching Students of Different Abilities and Learning Styles

  • Visual Thinking Strategies, Working With Images, and Viewing

  • Foundations of TESOL Methodology

  • How We Think and How It Affects Language Learning

  • & more!

The highlight of my remote intern experience was watching my students grow. I saw their confidence expand in ways that honor their voice and show they are leaders in their communities and classrooms. Become an Outreach360 remote intern! You are allowing students to push their own levels of creativity, leadership, and motivation in the classroom. You will feel happiness unlike any other, knowing that your students learned new vocabulary every day and saw their own potential. You make a huge difference in their lives, even without realizing it. Thank you to everyone! I will never forget this opportunity. I have learned so much.

Am I eligible to participate in the internship?

Outreach360's internship has been specifically designed for high school students (grades 10-12 only) and college students that enjoy working with and serving children and youth. We also welcome anybody who is post-secondary that has a desire to make a difference. You will need to be proficient using Zoom, however we are able to offer pre-internship training to ensure you are prepared. We also ask that you raise and/or donate a one-time program donation of $400. We will provide a fundraising page and resources to help you be successful in raising those funds.

How long is the internship?

The internship runs for twelve weeks total, beginning on October 10th and ending on November 28th. The internship takes place every Saturday for two hours, at a time slot of your choosing, and an additonal hour of independent study and planning outside of your service time, at a time that works for you and in your teaching team.

What is the cost to participate in the program?

There is a minimum program donation of $400 USD required for the 8-week internship. Each intern must be registered on our website with a $100 USD deposit due upon registration. The remaining $300 USD will need to be raised/donated by September 28th. Each intern will receive a personal donation page and family and friends are invited to contribute. All donations are tax-deductible for U.S. taxpayers.

How much Spanish do I need to know?

You are not required to know any Spanish to participate in this internship. The conversations you will be guiding will be entirely in English and our students are very accustomed to immersive-style lessons and interactions.

How will I benefit from participating in this internship?

In this internship, you will be making a real difference with students in underserved areas of Latin America by empowering them through this unique opportunity. You will also gain invaluable skills working with and instructing English learners. And the connections you make will make every day of this internship a truly magical experience. Additionally, Outreach360's virtual impact programs help you to grow in working and serving remotely, an increasingly prevalent skillset.

How will Outreach360 students benefit from my service?

The opportunity to speak with native and like-native English speakers is an unparalleled service you can offer our students. The time you spend with them will have an incredible impact in their speaking skills, allowing them to bring what they have learned in the classroom to real life. Your service turns their theoretical knowledge of the English language into reality. If you decide to add a Health & Science focus to your internship, your passion for your field will be an incredible inspiration for our students. Not only will it pique their curiosities for the sciences, but will also give them a unique chance to learn and practice a very specific set of vocabulary words.

What will be expected of me throughout the 8 weeks?

We expect you to login to your Zoom account using the link we provide on time for the sessions you signed up for for two hours each Saturday between October 10th and November 28th. We also ask that you set aside an hour of planning with your teaching partners outside of your Saturday service hours. If you are unable to attend a Saturday session, we expect you to communicate that to us as soon as possible.

What happens if I have to miss a day?

If you have to miss a day, we ask that you communicate that to Outreach360 as soon as you can.
