Roxana is from Jinotega, Nicaragua and was in the very first group of students that enrolled in our Learning Center in Nicaragua, nine years ago. She is now 16 years old, is in her final year of high school, and has been teaching English to the younger students in our program. Roxana is in our new TOEFL 1 English level (the TOEFL is an English proficiency exam) and has also been reinforcing her Spanish literacy and math skills in preparation to apply for our pre-university Adelante Serve-Study Program. Late last year, we asked Roxana why she chose to learn English and she shared:
I chose to learn English because I think that it is a big opportunity. I know that if I work hard today, I will have something better in the future. I like to learn English and learn more every day.
Just before classes at the Learning Center were suspended, we asked Roxana to sit down and write a short profile independently in English. Here is what she wrote.
Favorite book: Who Was Anne Frank?
Favorite color: Turquoise
Favorite sport/hobby: No sports, I enjoy listening to music.
What would you like to be when you grow up?
I would like to be a professional volunteer.
How does Outreach360 impact your life?
Outreach360 has been my second home since I can remember. Outreach360 has supported me through my ups and downs. The most beautiful words that have ever been said to me were by my Outreach360 teachers. “ Keep going.” “You can do it.” I can’t put into words what this program means to me and the impact that it has had in my life.
If you could make a change in the world what would it be?
It would be to stop hunger, especially in children. Because I think every child has the right to smile.
Roxana has now been studying at home using printed homework resource packets prepared by her Outreach360 in-country teachers. Roxana is not currently able to access virtual learning platforms from home, so she is anxious for our Learning Center doors to reopen in order to resume her studies and teaching.
