My name is Mandy Peters and I live in Aylmer, Ontario, Canada. I am an alumnus of the Culinary Management Program at Georgian College in Barrie, Ontario.
I first got involved with Outreach360 through my residence in my first year of college. A group of five of us residents went down to the Dominican Republic in February of 2016 and worked with a group from a university in California. We taught English to students at their school during the day, learned about Dominican history in the evenings, and enjoyed the sun at the beach in our off time. Near the end of the trip, I decided to become a Touch the Future Sponsor because I wanted to do what I could to continue serving the students and being a part of Outreach360.
Since my week with Outreach360 in the DR I have wanted to get involved again; and when Tom emailed me about the remote virtual internship I knew it would be the perfect opportunity to do so. At first, it seemed like the teaching would not be the same online as in-person, but the students are so excited to join the Zoom class and learn new things. It was truly enjoyable to create learning plans that I thought my students would enjoy. I will forever remember how welcoming the students were when they greeted me as their teacher and when they lit up when they knew an answer.
The volunteers also have their own learning portion of the remote internship which includes Spanish lessons, Leadership and Social Change (LSC) development, and interviews with the Outreach360 leaders. I thoroughly enjoyed our LSC class because it challenged me to think outside the box. Teacher Diana and Teacher Julie did a great job of introducing Spanish to us in a way that English-speaking interns could understand. I have even downloaded the app Duolingo on my phone and end each day with a 10-minute lesson.
I would highly recommend this internship to anyone! It is a great way to meet new people, educate young children’s minds, see a new country (virtually), learn a new language, and train in leadership development.
This Fall, Outreach360 is offering a unique two-way language learning internship. With just a two-hour commitment each Saturday for twelve weeks, you will provide our students with the valuable opportunity of speaking with native and like-native English speakers, and in turn, you will have the opportunity to practice and grow your Spanish skills.
