Lisa Gerrard is a professor at Algonquin College in Ottawa, Canada. She first joined Outreach360 on a trip with her students and has since involved her family in the experience. Lisa volunteered with her son and daughter in both Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic and has supported our students as a Touch the Future Sponsor for many years.
How did you first get involved with Outreach360?
I originally heard about Outreach360 through my role as a College Professor. I was instantly interested and was lucky enough to be a faculty leader for a group of students traveling to the Dominican Republic. The experience exceeded every possible expectation I could have had for the students, but it was also an incredible experience for myself personally. I knew it was something I wanted my own kids to be involved with and since my original trip, my two children and I have returned to the Dominican Republic and Nicaragua to volunteer.
What eye-opening moment sticks out to you most when you think back to your time in-country?
Seeing both my own children, the college students, and the local children smile and grow as people right in front of me.
What motivates you to continue your support?
Believing in the power of education and seeing the amazing work that is being done with the students being the primary focus.
How has Outreach360 impacted you and your family's life?
I believe it has changed the trajectory of our perspective in many ways. We speak of the experience often and continue to get involved in community projects both locally and abroad.
How has the feeling of being part of the Outreach360 community stayed with you?
I will forever be grateful for my initial involvement with Outreach360 through my workplace as it evolved into some cherished memories with my own children and life lessons we can all have with us for years to come.
What would you say to someone considering supporting Outreach360 in this way?
Do not hesitate to support this organization!
What message would you like to share with our students?
I would like to acknowledge the hard work that they do each and every day. I would also like to thank them for the many lessons they unknowingly have taught us during our time in Nicaragua and DR. We are forever grateful!
