How a Local Volunteer Found His Way Through Outreach360

"We all have ways to contribute to children and I have found my way." - Josué L.

Josué Leonel (15) is a local volunteer at our Learning Center in Jinotega, Nicaragua. Currently in high school, Josué joins us after school, Monday through Friday, to support the English, Spanish Literacy, and math classes with our younger students. His sister, Dulce, is one of those students; she was enrolled in the Learning Center program in 2017. Josué and Dulce have both attended Outreach360's neighborhood learning camps for many years.

In fact, Josué had seriously considered joining our first class of students when the Learning Center opened in 2011. "I had really wanted to be in the formal program, but since I didn’t want to

bother my mom, who was super busy with work, by asking her to go and register me, I lost that

opportunity. Later, I would go attend the camps with my little sister and would always motivate her to become a part of Outreach360. Now my sister is in the Learning Center and I have had the opportunity to learn English in town at a private language school."

Josué, like the other young volunteers who join us at the Learning Center weekly, brings incredible value to our students and receives a lot in return. "Josué is sharing his knowledge, energy and vitality alongside the students. Both are learning at the same time; they know each other, they support each other, they laugh together, and they learn together." says Outreach360 Site Director, Alma Fletes.

Josué sees the tangible impact Outreach360 has in his community. "I asked to volunteer at the Learning Center as a way to give back to the children who are a part of the program. This is a program that I believe in. I am happy that my little sister has this opportunity and I want to do what I can to contribute to this program."

With the disruption to our volunteer program in Nicaragua over the last year, having local volunteers like Josué step up has made all the difference. Josué encourages more community members to join in the volunteer effort: "The more people involved, the more individualized teachings can happen, and the students will benefit more."

One of our corporate values at Outreach360 is to continually involve people in the Outreach360 community to reach more and more children. We are so grateful to Josué for his involvement and commitment to Outreach360, our students, and the community as a whole.
