Spanish Immersion

Making an Impact While Using Your Spanish!

Beginning January 2nd, 2011, Outreach360 is offering a Spanish Immersion Program in the Dominican Republic. From the time you exit the airport building in Santiago, your Outreach360 experience will be "Spanish Only" - all conversations, announcements, and activities will be done in Spanish.  The Spanish Immersion Program option is currently only available for groups of 10 or more.

Note: All of our programs offer an excellent opportunity to practice your Spanish; many of the children and adults you will be working with speak little or no English.  The Spanish Immersion Program takes it a step beyond, in that speaking English is not permitted by our volunteers or staff.

Program Service Activities
The direct service program for the Spanish Immersion Program is teaching literacy.  During the school year, you'll primarily be teaching in local schools. During the summer, you'll be participating in reading camps. More info.

For students with graduate level Spanish knowledge, you may be teaching additional subjects in the classroom - history, geography, math, and more.

Who is Eligible?
Anyone with a basic foundation in Spanish who is willing to immerse themselves in Spanish during their time with Outreach360 is invited to participate.  Each volunteer needs to sign a Spanish Contract agreeing to the Spanish-only conditions.

Immersion Program, not a Teaching Program
This is not a teaching program; we aren't going to be focused on teaching you Spanish, but it will be a great opportunity to practice your Spanish. Your time with Outreach360 will be spent immersed in the Spanish language, both with other volunteers and local speakers. Spanish teachers bringing their students are invited to include teaching time (in Spanish), but teaching is not an inherent part of the Outreach360 program.

Logistics/Health & Safety

Our philosophy is to offer a "turn-key" approach to volunteering. You  should not be worrying about the basic logistics of your trip; you should instead be focused on the difference you are making in the community. Because we manage all of your ground transportation, food and housing, we are also able to manage the the health and safety of each volunteer.

It is natural and prudent to have concerns about health and safety when traveling overseas to a developing country. Here are some comments concerning these issues relative to traveling with Outreach360:

Health:

  • Only purified bottled water is used for cooking and drinking.
  • Mosquito nets are provided for sleeping.
  • A competent, professional clinic is located near the orphanage.
  • Emergency medical evacuation is included in your insurance.
  • Additional medical precaution information is located in the Volunteer Guide.

Safety and Security:

  • You will be living and working on the orphanage grounds and the local schools.
  • You will usually be living and working with 20-70 other volunteers.
  • You may be allowed to walk several blocks into the center of town as an organized group to buy ice cream, snacks, etc.
  • The orphanage is located in small, rural towns. The people in the Dominican Republic are very friendly, with no anti-American sentiment. Outreach360 volunteers are welcomed.
  • Since 1994, we have had over 10,000 volunteers working with us, with no issues of a volunteer’s personal safety being threatened.
